SoundWalk Performance Update

Converging Life Streams,

My hopes is to have the SoundWalk performance vid ready to share soon. I really enjoyed this piece and hope to experience it again, and give others a chance to do so with me. It was nice to be a part of the Soundwalk of Long Beach for the second time. Although it is bitter sweet.

I really do feel it is unfortunate it is a very little known event, mostly known to Long Beach locals, if even that. It is quite a unique event. Growth and positive spirit of audience and of the organizers is my desire.

One thing I found that was encouraging is the energy and spectrum of the audience. Most glad to see children and many of our community elders there and most ecstatic to see may colors and origins on many of the faces.

Art is strangled, sheltered in least terms, when hermetically sealed. Oxygen is for growth, your carbon, expelled, is just part of that cycle. You must breath on it, by all means break that air tight seal. Stir in all your germs all the filth, conjure up an elixir, strength is in the mix, to combat an pin hole panoramic view.

On a tangent now. Been thinking of that great white art box all artist love to put there finger prints on. So much white to reflect the light. To much space to contain the ego.

Tarfest Recap- "Research in Performance, Sound, and Dissent"

With hopes of transforming each molecule and atom of the Tarfest audience with waves of undulating, random and beaten sounds, this invocation delivered.

To tilt the unbalanced unconscious was the goal. Success measured in unveiling of error for tomorrow to be recalculated.

Thanks to ones that transformed into characters of weight, appreciation for the passive willing to absorb, acknowledgment for those active but not brought to light and special thanks to two extraordinary ladies (and one life stream in utero), willing testifiers, active and transformed.

One peculiar thing. Just before the performance music was turn on in the gallery, played through the p.a. system. By the end it fused with the noise of the performance and gave a nice texture.

This video and sound objects were presented the remaining days of the show.

Wooden form functions as a resonator feedbacking onto itself to produce a wave of undulating texture. Headpiece has a pitch bended analog synth. Piece was and exploration in control symbolism and recontextualization them.

SoundWalk-Oct. 3rd, 2009

It's that time of the year. Time for the annual Long Beach SoundWalk. It is quite remarkable that the only sound walk I know about in Southern California is in Long Beach. Well I am honored and glad to be part of it for a second year. This Year there will be another performance to experience. I will not bore you with the details.

If anything come to experience a night walk filled with many audible happenings around a usually not so contemporaneously experimental Visual arts neighborhood. Leave it to Long Beach To add the Noise to the Contemporary art scene. That is one thing I do feel it has going for it, the music Scene, always very attainable and affordable.

Come to the only SoundWalk (that I know of) in Southern California . There will be many sound works to absorb.

TarFest September 25th

On September 25th DivineBrick Research Sound Projects will have an opportunity to perform at this years Tar Fest reception. The performance will take place at the Korean Cultural Center at 5505 Wilshire Blvd 6p-10p. This is opening night after that the work and a video of the performance will be on display.
In honestly I do not know much of the Tar Fest. It appears it has been occurring since 2003. For more info visit the Tar Fest site here.
It is quite exciting not knowing what to expect of the audience or of the work. This performance has been slowing developing and is at an advance state of transmutation. There is still a lot to learn but it seems all is leading towards a reactionary illuminated state. Or that is the hopes. There will also be a guest performer, a Vishnu channeling, great art peer and contemporary, Vishal Goklani.
The hope is also to have a lot of fun with this one and take it to the next level of hilariously profound absurdity that opens ones eyes and makes one aware of all the strings that pull on ones belief's. So humor us and join us on a eagle trip though a landscape of noisy oceans, fascist peaks, Alchemical rivers of information lies, reflecting pools of self hate, and along the way rest stops of WTF.

Upcoming Performances

There are two performances that are occurring in the next couple of months. If all goes well and if you would delight in being present you will be able to see some performance works.
What you will have a chance to experience is a sweeping performance and a muli-media performance. Both have a sound component to them. Hopeful they will be a rich layering of artist contributions.
One of the performances will occur on September 25, 2009 at the Tar Fest in Los Angeles and another on October 3, 2009 at the SoundWalk of Long Beach.
More details once things are set.

Gestalt Therapy, Bruce Nauman, and DBRP

Applying ones focus to an act, seeing the here-and-now, finding the fluidity of the experience at hand followed by the next experience preceding the previous, seems at this moment in time almost impossible. At times our obsession with organization clouds the reason why we focus on the past and future, which is to understand the present. So it seems the more we have to stimulate our minds the more we need ways to revise how we see the world and how we can experience it through ourselves not through filters. As artist and art lovers this dilemmas has given us permission to allow the rise of art forms that take the now and the experience into full appreciation and contemplation.
A prime example is performance art. With performance art there is now a forum where the experience is at the core of the art. Not only does this art form enriches our understanding of existing in the now but grounds us in a place of the performance, thus we have the concept of time/space to play with. Once film and video collided with performance art a new dimension was added. With a way of documenting the act, the act became frozen in time. What remained was an event with a fix point but with infinite occurrences. The question now at which I present is how can one create a work that focuses its attention to the here and now but has a third possibility of infinite now’s and be successful? To explore this possibility of an art that can be about the here-and-now but can have infinite “now’s” I will investigate three subjects, Bruce Nauman, my personal work and Gestalt Therapy in the clinical sense. With less of an empirical approach and more of an intuitive feel I will try to explore Bruce Nauman’s and my work as attempts in Gestalt experimental interventions.
First lets explore what is the approach Gestalt Therapy takes in shifting ones experience from the known and assumed to the present and new. Gestalt therapy is a method of awareness, by which perceiving, feeling, and acting are understood to be separate from interpreting, explaining and judging using old attitudes. This distinction between direct experience and indirect or secondary interpretation is developed in the process of therapy. The client learns to become aware of what they are doing psychologically and how they can change it. By becoming aware of and transforming their process they develop self-acceptance and the ability to experience more in the "now" without so much interference from baggage of the past. As it goes “ clear perception of the immediate present leads to ‘good gestalten’, well formed or well-represented relationships…To handle present demands well, a person needs to be able to clearly see the necessary relationships among important elements of the current experience without importing concerns from the past or about the future.”
An important tool in gestalt therapy is the intervention. “The foundation for intervention in Gestalt therapy lies in this dictum: the most potent interventions are existential, experiential, and experimental. The existential dimensions leads the therapist to the here-and-now of interactions with clients: the experiential dimension focuses on the knowledge that emerges from awareness of any phenomenon: experimentation builds upon the belief that we learn the most important personal truths by discovering them for ourselves.” Because the structure of Gestalt therapy lies in relying on the phenomenon occurring at the present moment the process of this form of therapy is a “touch feely” one. To have success with gestalt therapy client and therapist must have full concentration, therapist and client must not be aloof.
In Bruce Nauman’s Work entitled “Walking in an Exaggerated Manner Around the Perimeter of a Square” (1968) one can see that the central focus is the act itself. It is a classic experiment from Gestalt therapeutic techniques in which “exaggeration brings the inner experience in to focus”. Nauman pays close attention to the action he is engaged in. Every movement he makes is conscious and momentary. Because of Nauman’s intuitive approach the work becomes art about the act. As he said the way he works is “much more intuitive…It has to do with working on something and finding out ‘wow, that’s far out or interesting.’ And then thinking about it, trying to figure out why it interested you…it has to do with intuitively finding something…I never seem to get there from knowing some result or previously done experiment.”
Naumans own words leads us to understand that the success of the work lies in the three modes of Gestalt intervention existential, experiential, and experimental. The focus of the work is the action of walking in an exaggerated manner around the perimeter of a square. The existential element is seen in each movement, which seems very intentional and focused. The experiential element is the knowledge gain by Nauman’s experience of the phenomenon of walking in an exaggerated manner around the perimeter of a square, one can even go as far as to say that Nauman's “Figure and Ground” (in Gestalts term) collides with the viewer’s “figure and ground” to become an intersubjective phenomenon that is walking in an exaggerated manner around the perimeter of a square. When this occurs what is learned for Nauman by experiencing this phenomenon is his awareness of his body, his weight and familiarity with the boundary that he has made for himself. Nauman becomes a vehicle in which the viewer can learn some important “truths”. We become Nauman and we understand the awkwardness that it is to me human and mobile. We all are preprogrammed to walk but there are infinite possibilities of how to walk. What the viewer learns is the same sense of body, weight and boundary but this investigation can go further for the viewer it can be seen and studied over and over again. The here-and-now is suspended and infinite.
This Gestalt dictum in which the existential, experiential, and experimental are important elements in intervention has some how emerged within my work. Most likely it is the influence of some years of studing psychotherapy, being in therapy and some studies in eastern philosophy which Gestalt theories have also been influenced by. One good example is a work entitled “Sweep” (2008). This piece was in part performance and video documentary. The work consisted of various performances in which I recorded sound and/or video of me sweeping specific areas of the city of Long Beach. The location was not important only the boundaries I set. The boundaries I set were arbitrary, mostly they were determined by an area I found interesting in some form or another to sweep. In each performance I concentrated on the technique of sweeping towards me systematically going from one side of the perimeter and back until every inch of the area was swept and touched by the brooms bristles. Rhythm and intent of movement was crucial so was continuation of the act with no intervention from anything. With the audio/video material I obtained I created a video of the various acts. The P.O.V. (point of view) of the video was a view above the broom towards the floor; the camera was mounted on the broom so the only stillness in the image was the broom. What was vital in the video was the P.O.V., the collage of various events that were represented by video and audio, and the action itself.
My Gestalt intent can be heard in my own words, which were written as a proposal for the piece,
“Through many exposures to various activities that I have been intrigued with and have practiced throughout I am slowly getting at some sort of activity that affects every part of me that I intend to enrich. What will be the result in the end is negligible, and to what extent the overall enrichment will be is unimportant. Yes the drive is to eventually get at some unification that will be all consuming, but really what is only needed is the drive.
The body physical, the spiritual, aesthetics, and the tool are basic parameters for this piece. I plan to pick various locations in the urban that I will sweep with one broom. This broom will be a standard straw broom. The action will only consist of sweeping, there will be no displacement of the substance that is swept, and it will only be left in a pile. With each meditation I hope to learn something new: what will be the next location, how much, how long, and to what extremes or lack of extremes the next meditation will be.
I feel that the proper meaning is unimportant as of now. I believe that the only proper way to further explore this concept is to sweep. With the meditation I will find more insight to which way the concept will go.”
A here-and-now attitude was need for me to experience the motion of the performance, the phenomenon was getting lost in the action and having the here-and-now come and go as I tried to focus on the stroke and rhythm and what was gain for me and hopefully for the viewer is an infinite feeling of the here-and now of the performance even if it is temporary through the video piece.
Gestalt theory and practice can be helpful in understanding human relations, self-awareness and can be a useful tool for the artist as a studio practice. Viewing Bruce Nauman's work and my work using Gestalt theory and practice we can see that there is a way to investigate the art practice as a form of intervention for the artist and viewer to learn new things about the artist, the viewer, (the figure) and the world around us (the ground). With this view and the artist/video as a vehicle for intervention one can have an experience of the here-and-now with infinite occurrences. What we then have is a form of art that can intervene in infinite moments of various viewers, each having a separate here-and-now with intersubjectivity.

Some Words on Creation By DBL

Error is essential in any breakthrough. All becomes more clear when all becomes muddled. Human existence at this moment, I have come to realize, is an endless plot to structure. With great error we try to conceptualize the simplest phenomenon. Humans, what is it with their categorizing? Without it they would go into disorder. Every time they would look at a chair the mind would reel at trying to conceptualize the object. I sometimes wonder and sometimes explore this idea of running into something like it is the first time I have ever seen it. How would a table function if you did not know what it was for? Stand on it? What else is a tree for but for climbing? How would the child in you use a thread chaser? Or a hammer? Ingenuity is not static. What is this instinctual need to follow a direct path? But insanity is just a thought away. Belief, religion, was the start of this grander scale of order, and science not immune to this either. We all seem to have this need to solve.
From the top I start. The start of my voyage was choppy and somewhat haphazard. But I soon realized that to understand, one must start at the beginning. Creation is random, the only reason it seems divine is because the formulas for the randomness are so accidentally perfect, mistakes only make it stronger. Do you follow?
To some, tumorous we are. Multiply... some parts unneeded. Quarks are essential. Science and religion are but fools in love, ignoring each other’s glances, too proud to approach one another. Sleepless nights are self-inflicted. Relations that exist in mere assumptions are relations that exist in masturbatory dreams. Safe but non-progressive is the thought that one idea is the best and most righteous, fact can only prove what we know. You are more religious then you think and rely on facts to prove your belief system. We seem to live our life to prove we are not human.
Consuming images are what I try to repel but then I am the consuming image-maker. How can one attract another when one has thoughts of discontent? But this is not my intention, I will find a new way of thought if and only if all that is done is just make me a wandering mess. Discontent with the norm is the first step to realizing what I do is just to satisfy and itch that we all have; to create a world that is our own. Rituals, alters, belief systems only exist to calm us, to tap into the origin of this motive is to find the formula; universal theory is not a mathematical equation but a broad and simple reason. Why do I carry things I do not need, what are the symbols that encompass your safety net? Why does one pick the human form as a base to always come back to? I come back to discontent. Of course I do, it is so calming and familiar. Imagine pods of emerging tumors, that is the way a friend of mine sees humans. I am more foolish, I see the beauty in her, and I sense it in her. Taste, I study I enjoy, there is not just one act in lovemaking there is not just one lovemaking. My downfall is the lovesick idealist in me, wrapped around my neck, itself it kills. Feels good to have a reason to wake up no matter how delusional. I will never be enlightened but what drives the stroke further in, what brings it back out? Simple stimuli? When recorded and dated we feel comfort. For future, for now we make, we mark, we date. If I had it my way I would squeeze in any place I fit. What does this reveal? Much I know not, free form reveals more to the consuming viewer not the comfortable dreamer. I fear we have not felt pain in a while, so lets all sit down and cry why should the stoic in you man the craft: hands hurt as much as hands work. We fool ourselves that what we make is only and truly, while she chuckles at our lack of ingenuity.
I enjoy just free thought more then structured thought but unfortunately, like you I am built to analyze and reason out the conflict that exist in the daily values that I come across. Well, one thing if for sure, the reason I am an artist is to stay sane if I was a mathematician I would never stop thinking, maybe I would be a good one but sanity is something I like to be close to. I do not mind wondering past the threshold of this concept and dwelling in a space that I find more comfortable then my mother’s womb but like the rest of you I like company and company unfortunately are not easy excepting of wandering without restraint.
Imagine yourself stimulated by everything you do. Does all touch you feel make you feel embarrassed to feel the way you do when you expose yourself to what is what you love and hate. Does all that touches those nerves that are only inwardly felt in the comfort zone you have built out of brick, inside that one place that not me not him not them not even her know, come from everything and anything that you come in contact with. Connected is all that comes from the tangent that vines from your fingers your nose your toes that organ that only one caresses firing pulses to the grandeur web of thought. Plugged into the matrix. Can you live that way? Feel every curve every soft change, harsh jar. Delusion can become realized. Carefully experienced. Carefully loved. Thin translucent skin to feel each fine tubercle, each neuron, that one squirm that tells you, you are on the right trail. Get lost a little to find a new pleasure. Give a space-time event a chance to change you.
So what is the DivineBrick, one more ad-hoc to satisfy the itch; always changing and growing? It is the need to understanding the origin of belief. This concept unclear and hard to ground therefore the DivineBrick Research Project was established. Can ones self delusion be more then just a way of dealing with what is real to them and what is not, when can it become a new way of thought or at least a brilliant way of thinking, expressing and understanding what is already there? When does delusion cross over to a vision? When does the half ass genius become the visionary? Sleepless nights all become to accustomed; my lover finds no pleasure in this closed eye event. Caresses me with common symptoms of short breaths. Grinding teeth. Repress you. Resist you. Sleep tries to pull me from this love I have for the open-eyed endless grind, pump, shake, I never settle. That warmth that is sleep alarms me. Things mustn't feel so good. Trouble comes when ones finds themselves friends with god. Equals can find more conflict. Questions become more interesting when one knows no answer will exist in their lifetime. I don’t stand on either end of science or religious. My Search is parallel.

Long Beach Soundwalk and DivineBrick Research Sound Projects on Huell Howser

KCET will be re-airing the Visiting With Huell Howser, in which he visits Long Beach's Soundwalk, on January 23 at 7:30 pm and 12:30 am. The interview we got was ok considering it was impromptu, early in the many performances we did, levels off and all but fun none the less. I knew what to expect knowing his interview style and wholesomeness so I really did not know what to say, plus I could not hear much and was in no state to do an interview. I wish they would of had footage of the later performances. We settled in, levels, rhythm and the people really started to feel it...especially me. Unfortunately very little sound and video footage exist of this piece and is now shattered. Although is is hard to really record the really sub bass sounds that make the piece.
